Anniversary

Today marks four years that my husband has been forced to stay with me married to me.

I never thought that I would get married.  When I was younger I would hear other people talking about how they saw themselves in the future and I always thought something was wrong with me because I could never see myself getting married, or having kids or growing older in general.  For the longest time I thought maybe I was going to die before I became an adult because I couldn't see anything happening in my future.

When I met Corry in November of 2006, I was at a point in my dating history where I was done dating.  He emailed me off an internet site and we just started talking.  I thank God everyday for what happened next because if it hadn't happened, my life would be totally different and I probably wouldn't be married to Corry today.

In 2006 I reconciled with an old friend (friendship timeline and not age!) accepted an invitation to be in her wedding in Florida in December.  We were supposed to drive there a few days before the wedding and then have the wedding December 3rd.  The night before they were to get married we were on the boat that was their venue and while walking off I stepped into a sunk in manhole lid and fell and broke three bones in my left ankle and severely sprained my right ankle.  I will cover this exciting injury more tomorrow, but just know now that it was life changing.

Because of this injury I was forced to move back in with my parents until I was able to walk up and down the stairs and wasn't able to actively date.  This forced me to really get to know someone before I dated them too quickly.  Insert Corry Lee Price into my life.

We met officially in January 2007 and have been together ever since.  He is my everything and I love him more everyday.  I love you, Corry.  Thank you for loving me and taking care of us and being an awesome husband, dad and provider.  You are one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

My husband is amazing

My husband and I have been married for almost four years.  He is the only man that I have actually wanted to spend more than a few weeks with.  It's comforting to know that he loves me as much as he does.  I know that he loves me because no one else would tolerate my random quirks and annoyances.

My husband is not a sappy poem writer.  He doesn't sing me love songs or surprise me with slow dances in the kitchen.  However, he knows that all of those things are unnecessary to make me happy.  He knows me well enough to know that there are much more important things that he could do to keep me happy.

  1. He lets me sleep when I am sleeping.  I have always been a sleeper.  I don't think that there are many times throughout the day when I am not tired.  It got a lot worse after my thyroid removal about 10 years ago.  Because I am always tired, I can fall asleep pretty much anytime, anywhere.  There are times when I inadvertently fall asleep on his side of the bed.  He loves me enough to let me stay asleep and he will just get into bed on my side of the bed.  He will also let me stay asleep on the couch if I fall asleep there until it's time to go to bed.  This is love.
  2. He cooks dinner(s) during the week.  With my ridiculous commute + long work days, I am ridiculously unexcited about coming home to cook dinner.  He is great about making dinner for the family and it actually turns out awesome.  I am blessed to have a husband who knows how to cook and grill.  This is love.
  3. He supports me.  When I decided that I wanted to have raised bed gardens this year, he was totally behind me and helped my mom construct them.  When I decided that I had enough of the silver hair that was creeping into my abnormally dark hair color, he went with me to have 12+ inches of hair cut off and dyed.  He doesn't question when I say that I want to do something and he goes out of his way to make sure that it happens.
Hopefully he knows how much I love him and that I want to grow old with him.  Well, I want him to grow old with me - I don't want to get any older than I am right now.

I love my husband

Up until I met Corry I never wanted to get married.  I wasn't sure how my future was going to turn out but I knew that it didn't include children or a husband.  I wasn't happy with how my relationships with men were going at that time but I was at a loss as to what I really wanted.  Then I started talking with Corry...

We met online in December 2006.  We began talking right before I went to Florida to be in Jennifer's wedding.  Unfortunately, the night before the wedding I ended up falling and shattering my ankle.  I flew back to Texas and had surgery to reconstruct three bones in my ankle.  I couldn't walk for six weeks and had to wear a boot for the next few months.  I never thought that I would say this but I am grateful for breaking my ankle because even though it has set me back physically, I wouldn't be a wife or a mother today if it wouldn't have happened.

We spoke over the phone everyday numerous times a day for a few weeks and then I finally went to meet him.  We drove around in Arlington for over an hour and just talked about everything.  Once I dropped him off, I kept thinking how much I liked him and how different I felt about him and our situation than I had with any other boy prior to him.  Once I went back to work I moved back to my apartment in Dallas and shortly after that he moved in.  We always joke that he moved in one backpack at a time.

I'm not going to say that I easily decided that I wanted to get married.  I have had my fair share of panic attacks about the whole situation.  Up until Corry came along my longest relationship was like a month.  That isn't something to be proud of, but it's the truth.  I will admit that it still shocks me that he has been able to put up with me this long.  It just became easier and easier to see myself spending time with Corry on a long term basis.

We talked about getting married long before we got engaged.  We bought our rings before he asked me to marry him.  He proposed in Lake Tahoe in 2008 when I was in Carson City on business and we were married April 2, 2009.  I love him more today than I could have even dreamed about that day.

I say all of that to bring you the top 10 things that I love about my husband:

  1. I love that he is an amazing provider who works all hours of the day and night to ensure that we have the things that we need and also the things that we want.
  2. I love that he is an amazing father to all four of his children.
  3. I love that he makes me laugh even when I don't want him to.
  4. I love that he goes out of his way to make me feel special.
  5. I love that he tells me I am beautiful.
  6. I love that he tells our daughter everyday that she is beautiful.
  7. I love that he teaches me new things about love, relationships and life in general everyday.
  8. I love that he sacrifices to make our family happy.
  9. I love that he knows just how to make me happy and does whatever it takes to make me happy.
  10. I love that he loves my family.

To use a line that is sometimes overused - I love him to the moon and back.

A marriage reminder from an unlikely source

I don't plan to do this very often because I don't want to talk bad (publicly) about my husband's ex-wife but today I honestly couldn't help myself.  I am sure that at some point I will forget this rule but I would like to not talk about my husband's past life as a husband to someone else.  It should be pretty easy to do since we don't regularly communicate with her except about the children, however today was one of those random days when something so funny happens that you just can't help but talk about it.

Today she shared the following picture on her Facebook wall:

This is instantly humorous to anyone who knows her because if you have ever met her and spent about 15 seconds with her you know that she is incapable of not violating all of these "rules" in any relationship.  She cheated on my husband for years before they were divorced and has cheated on almost every man that she has been with since they split up.  In fact, she is currently living with a guy while she is still married to another man.  Classy.

As funny as this activity was today it did remind me that these "rules" are important and should be the groundwork to any good relationship.  Two of the five should be "duh" rules: stay faithful and don't flirt with others.  If you can't or don't want to follow these two rules then you have no business being married, at least in my opinion.  The others, I will be honest, require some work.  Not that I don't want to make my husband feel loved and wanted but I will admit that some days definitely require work.  Not because my husband is hard to love or difficult, but because I have a full time job and two small children and often times our marriage takes a backseat to all of that.  I don't want it to be like that but it's the one thing that I don't have to constantly babysit to make work, so often times I forget that it takes love and nurturing as well.

Part of my resolutions for this year is definitely to rekindle #5.  We have talked a few times before about wanting to go on more dates with each other without kids.  One of the things that you don't think about when you have kids is that you will never eat normally until your children are about five years old, possibly later than that.  Once they can eat food(s) you have to spend the time ahead of time thinking about what they are going to eat related to what you are going to eat, or you have to think about what from an eating establishment that they are going to be able to eat.  Then you have to either feed it to them or figure out how to get it in a form that they can eat once it comes to the table; after you figure out how to re-arrange all of the nonsense from the table to where it isn't in any arms reach of either one of your children.  Why do servers insist on putting stuff in front of babies?  Ridiculous... Anyway, after enough days of that you realize that you need a break from that to just be a couple.  I am striving to do more of that this month.

I say all of that to say that I love my husband.  I love him more than I ever thought that I could love someone in a relationship.  He is the love of my life and the father of my children and I will never love another person quite like him ever in my life.
